If you just bought the house and you have no idea of its history or even access to its blueprints, then it would be really hard for you to find your cesspit. But have no fear because by following the given methods, you will surely find your cesspit in no time:
1. Hardware
When you speak of looking for hardware, it means that you have to look for stakes or manhole covers. You could also look for ports for cleaning that resemble a capped diameter pipe that is twelve inches in diameter. Also look for electrical boxes that may be connected to the cesspool. This may take some time and sharp eyesight but it does work.

2. Landscaping clues
Look around you and notice the landscaping. Remember that there are no old trees should be planted near your cesspool. Instead, look for rock piles, mounds of dirt, depressions in the ground, or raised areas in the ground. The plants on top of the cesspool may be sparse if your cesspool has already washed away or very lush and green if the cesspool is leaking.

3. Metal detector
It is common for cesspools to be made with reinforced concrete. If you have a metal detector, you could easily find the metal part of the cesspool construction.

4. Ask
It would also be helpful for you to ask the septic pump company in your area if the cesspool is already four years and above. They may have been already asked to clean the cesspool around that time.

5. Sewer lines
Following the sewer lines may also help you locate your cesspool. With the use of a mechanical snake or a rebar rod, you could easily find the location of the pipes that lead to your cesspool.

6. Drain lines
Drain lines could also help in finding the location of your cesspool. These lines carry the cesspool contents away from the tank and then let them be absorbed by the surrounding area. Look for pipes that are plastic. There should be swampy or lush vegetation in the area because of the leaking cesspool. Probe around with your rebar until you have some resistance. When you hear plastic pipes touched by the rebar rod, then follow that pipe to your cesspool.

7. Mother Nature
If it is snowing in your area, just rely on Mother Nature to locate your cesspool. Snow usually melts a lot faster over cesspools so it would be really easy for you to locate your cesspool.

It is not advisable for you to walk over the cesspool if you think that it seems ready to give out. When you see depressions in the surrounding area, those might be indications of collapses in the past.
